Hello Dr. Laibow. Thank you so much for all you do! I watched with great interest and curiousity the interview you gave years ago mentioning that a certain female member of European royalty told you that " it's almost time for the Great Culling". I have strong suspicions that the woman in question is Margrethe II of Demark. I lnow you feel bound by patient confidentiality not to say who it was but will the death of said patient make you feel free to name names? Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words. No, I am not free to name names.
If I told something to a doctor, lawyer or priest who was bound by ethics and laws to hold my information in confidence, my death would not release that doctor, lawyer or priest to share what I had confided under that cloak of confidentiality.
Would your death release someone to break your confidence? So why would it be different with a person who happens to be a monarch? I do not see it as different in any way.
As I understand it,- please correct me if I'm wrong - she just arrogantly blurted it out, you didn't ask her for such info, nor did she demand you pledge secrecy (Whoever "she" may be; I could be wrong about who it is).To my mind, what do you really owe her? I mean, it's not like sharing private medical information or something like that, which I think would be breaking a confidence. I don't want to push the issue any further and I completely respect your opinion but I am interested in as clear and detailed picture of the truth as possible both for myself and the historical record. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Anyway, keep up the great work!
Patients do not have to ask for a pledge of secrecy to rely on the fact that everything they say, do or share is utterly confidential if their doctor is ethical.
As a licensed physician, I am obligated by law to hold everything in confidence shared with me by a patient unless required by a Court of Law or permitted to discuss or disclose the information with someone in writing.
There are special circumstances in which, if the life of the patient or someone they have expressed a direct threat towards is threatened, some information may be revealed but the conditions are very specific and the responsibility for not violating those conditions is serious. (Duty to warn, Tarasoff)
It is not a matter of what I owe to this person. It is a matter of what I owe to every patient through ethics and the law.
