On March 13, 2024, I introduced the Stop Funding Global Terrorists Act of 2024 (S. 3908), which would help ensure that taxpayer dollars do not end up in the hands of the Taliban, or other designated terrorist organizations, by withholding all contributions to the UN for Afghanistan assistance until the Secretary of State certifies that these groups will not receive any shipments. S. 3908 was referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Moreover, the U.S. Intelligence Community has deemed the accusations made by Israel against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to be credible. These allegations pertain to the involvement of UNRWA’s employees in the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. UN leadership continues to tolerate the support of Islamic militants by their aid workers, which is why I, along with Senator Collins (R-ME), demanded Secretary-General Antonio Guterres terminate Commissioner Phillippe Lazzarini for allowing Hamas-sympathizers to operate freely in the UN assistance programs. I will continue to work to increase transparency and accountability within the organization to ensure it goes after real human rights abuses and serves the interests of the American people.
